The Crisis Cycle

All the crises of recent decades are rooted in the construction of the system. The apparent solution of one crisis gives rise to the next. The fundamental problems are permanently pushed into the future — because the system is WITHOUT ALTERNATIVE (alternativlos).

WITHOUT ALTERNATIVE is not a political concept. It is a declaration of intellectual surrender — disguised as realism. Whoever says something is without alternative has no imagination and no ability to think analytically and synthetically. The true realist asks: what alternatives are there, what do they cost, who bears these costs — and why are they not discussed? WITHOUT ALTERNATIVE ends this question before it is asked.

That is no accident. It is system logic.

I. The mechanics of the crisis cycle

All the great crises of recent decades share a common structure: the immediate symptoms are treated, the structural causes remain untouched. The apparent solution gives rise to the next crisis — bigger, more expensive, with more damage for the majority and more profit for the buffered zone.

This is not a failure of politics. It is the function of the system. The designers of the cruise control — the actors in the buffered zone — have no incentive to touch the cause. The crisis is their business model. The profiteers generally grow ever richer — but the crises boost their gains enormously.

The mechanism is precise: printed paper — fiat money, government bonds, central bank money — is turned in crises into real values. Assets: property, companies, infrastructure, raw materials. That is no metaphor. That is literally what happens.

II. 2008 — a global extreme case

The 2008 financial crisis was neither an unforeseeable shock nor a blueprint — the construction of the system lay considerably earlier. It was the foreseeable result of a system that since the 1980s, with Thatcher, Reagan and the Washington Consensus, had systematically removed all negative feedback: deregulation of the financial markets, abolition of the Glass-Steagall separation of commercial and investment banking, free movement of capital without controls, securitisation of risks that nobody understood any more. 2008 was the first global extreme case — the moment when the cruise control for the first time drove into a bend big enough to drag the whole world along with it.

The reaction was the blueprint for all the crises that followed. The Fed and the ECB flooded the markets with liquidity — cheap money that arrived first with those who needed it least: the banks and the big funds. Whoever had access to this money used it to buy real assets at crisis prices. The housing crisis that had ruined millions of homeowners created the capital for big funds to buy the same portfolio for cents on the dollar. Printed paper became housing — concentrated in ever fewer hands.

The structural causes? Untouched. The banks that were "too big to fail" grew bigger. The regulation that was introduced — Dodd-Frank, Basel III — was systematically weakened in the following years. The cruise control got no brake. It got new batteries.

III. The euro crisis and Angela Merkel's role

The euro crisis was not the result of Greek profligacy — that is the narrative the Megamachine produced. It was the result of a structural design flaw: a monetary union without a fiscal union, without common deposit insurance, without transfer mechanisms to even out economic divergences. Economists had warned of precisely this problem before the euro was introduced. It was ignored.

When the crisis came, the answer was austerity — not because it made economic sense, but because it protected the interests of the German and French creditor banks. The rescue programmes for Greece were in reality rescue programmes for the European banks holding Greek government bonds. The money flowed to Greece and straight on to Frankfurt and Paris. Printed paper became rescued bank balance sheets — at the expense of the Greek population.

Angela Merkel played a specific role in this. Her famous WITHOUT ALTERNATIVE policy protected the interests of the German creditor banks — personified in her close relationship with Deutsche Bank chief executive Josef Ackermann — at the expense of the European periphery, of the democratic legitimacy of the EU institutions, and in the long run of Germany's own industrial base. Many generations yet will have to suffer from her legacy.

How is that possible? There are only two alternatives, and they are without alternative: a very precarious capacity for analysis or an extremely one-sided orientation. Whoever says WITHOUT ALTERNATIVE in such a position and is demonstrably wrong — whoever frames the euro crisis as Greek failure while German banks are rescued, whoever expands energy dependence on Russia while everyone warns against it, whoever blocks investment in infrastructure for years — has either not understood the connections or has understood them and acted this way all the same. Tertium non datur.

Whoever says WITHOUT ALTERNATIVE is saying: the interests of the buffered zone are the limits of the thinkable. Everything else is fantasy. That is not a political position. It is the Megamachine speaking through a human being.

IV. Covid, the Iran war — and always the same pattern

Covid: quantitative easing on a historic scale. Asset prices rose while the real economy collapsed. Stock indices recovered within weeks. The restaurant owners did not. Supply chains that had been optimised for years for maximum efficiency without resilience broke down. The structural lesson — resilience needs redundant capacity, and that costs money — was not learned. The optimisation went on.

The Iran war of 2026: the economic consequences hit the population through higher energy prices. The answer of the German federal government — which styles itself the "last bullet of democracy" — is a crisis bonus of €1,000 that employers are supposed to pay. 22 million pensioners, 11 million children, 3 million unemployed receive nothing. To him that hath shall be given. The structural dependence on fossil fuels — the cause of the vulnerability — remains untouched.

The pattern is always the same: relieve the immediate pain. Do not touch the cause. Prepare the next crisis. And in every crisis: printed paper becomes real values — concentrated with those who already sit in the buffered zone.

V. Why it stays this way

The question is not why politics acts like this. The question is why it cannot act otherwise. The answer lies not in the quality of the politicians but in the structure of the system.

Structural reforms that would tackle the causes of the crises necessarily mean that the buffered zone bears losses — regulation that limits profits, taxation that slows accumulation, rules that reduce information asymmetries. But the buffered zone controls the repair shop: the financing of the parties, access to the media, the informal networks in which political careers are decided.

WITHOUT ALTERNATIVE is therefore not an intellectual failure. It is the correct description of the limits of what is politically possible within a system that protects its own framework conditions. Whoever does not accept these limits leaves the system — or is excluded by it.

That is the last bullet of the Megamachine: not violence, not censorship, not open repression. But the complete colonisation of the possible — so that every alternative appears utopian before it can be thought.
